Why study Business Studies?

Why study Business?

Business Studies is a popular choice with students at GCSE and A’ Level in Brighton and Hove. It is an academic subject that really reflects the world of work, and whatever your path in later life, you will almost certainly benefit from having a good grasp of the concepts, whether you become a sole trader (work for yourself), or an employee of a massive multinational company.

Let’s get a perspective from a recent student, Dan from Hove – Dan studied Business at GCSE, and A’ Level and now has a degree – Dan picks up the story – “Business was my favorite subject at school, by a long way. I liked the way I could instantly relate it to examples I could see around me. I liked the idea of management, or maybe self-employment, and it was a great choice for many careers. As I have developed and done part-time jobs, it has really helped to have an understanding of business disciplines.”

Dan, however, had undiagnosed dyslexia at school and sixth form. He continues “It manifested as being behind all of the time, my reading speed was slow, and the teacher was moving on before I had even finished reading the activity, I did feel a bit behind, as I really wanted to engage with the activities, but just couldn’t keep up”. Unsurprisingly Dan’s academic results were disappointing, but he did have enough to enable him to enroll on a Foundation degree at a local FE college. Here, he managed to get a full learning needs assessment, and Dan says “My needs were based around having severe dyslexia. That was amazing, to have an explanation for many things, and being able to identify strategies to deal with those was great, and for the first time, I didn’t feel inferior to my peers!”

Dan had a business studies tutor throughout his course and the relationship was very successful – what did the business studies tutor help you with Dan? “Everything – firstly he always helped me understand the assessment criteria. He really helped me manifest my own ideas, and structure written content, he was really positive and always saw the best in me!”. What other skills have you picked up by studying Business with your tutor? “Well I have really improved my soft skills, like time management, teamwork, communication, and presentations – my all-round performance and confidence has really grown”. Dan is too modest to tell you that he was successful on the Foundation Degree and enrolled on the final top-up, and graduated from Brighton University this year with a First in BSc. Business Management. Some journey!

Anything else Dan? “Well, this final year, we looked at really current material and had to do case studies regarding things like Brexit and Covid. I had to identify a business that had overcome those external factors and grown. It was REALLY interesting talking to business owners, and I found one that had ‘Pivoted’ within 2 weeks of lockdown, and not only survived, but increased turnover by 4 – studying that was really interesting, and spurred me on even more!”
